Södermalm queer guide — gay & LGBTQ+ Söder, Stockholm
Södermalm — known locally as Söder — is the heart of queer Stockholm. It's the city's most LGBTQ+-dense neighbourhood, with the highest concentration of gay bars, queer-friendly cafés, sapphic nights and community spaces. If you have one day in Stockholm during Stockholm Pride 2026, spend it here.
Why Södermalm is the queer neighbourhood
Södermalm has been Stockholm's bohemian, alternative and queer-friendly district for decades. The southern half of the island — known as SoFo (south of Folkungagatan) — concentrates the indie shops, queer-leaning cafés and bars that give the area its reputation. Long-standing queer venues like Side Track and Mälarpaviljongen anchor the scene, and most of Stockholm's recurring sapphic and queer club nights (Moxy, Lilith, Flatmates) program here.
Where to go
- Gay bars on Söder — Side Track is the longest-running gay bar in Stockholm. See the full gay bars in Stockholm guide for current openings and the queer-friendly pub list.
- Sapphic & lesbian nights — most of the recurring queer women's nights program in Södermalm venues. See our sapphic club nights guide.
- Mälarpaviljongen — the iconic summer terrace overlooking the water, run by RFSL Stockholm. A queer Stockholm institution during the warmer months.
- Cafés and daytime spots — SoFo is full of queer-friendly independent cafés. Great for daytime planning before the night kicks off.
- Cruising and community — Tantolunden park and the surrounding green spaces are long-standing queer hangouts in summer.
Getting around
Södermalm is one of the most walkable parts of central Stockholm. Slussen, Medborgarplatsen, Mariatorget and Skanstull are the main metro stops. Walking from Slussen to Skanstull along Götgatan takes you through the heart of the queer-leaning shopping and bar streets.
During Stockholm Pride 2026
The Stockholm Pride parade traditionally passes through Södermalm before ending at Pride Park. Expect rainbow flags on every street, packed bars every night and spillover crowds from Pride Park across the whole island. See our full Stockholm Pride 2026 guide for the week's program.
